Denison Brewing Company

From 1989 to 2003, Denison's Brewing Company was located at 75 Victoria Street in Toronto, Ontario. Since 20 03, two of its most popular beers have been produced under licensing agreements.  Denison's Weissbier and Dunkel are now brewed under the direction of the original Brewmaster, Michael Hancock at the Cool Beer Brewing Company in Etobicoke, Ontario. The smallest amount previously available for retail sale was a 20 litre keg, but Denison's Weissbier ("Weissbier") is now available in 473 ml cans at select LCBO stores.

We sampled Weissbier on October 14, 2011 in a 473 ml can with no visible date code. Weissbier was 5.3% alcohol by volume. The beer poured a very cloudy yellow/orange colour which was unchanged when held up to the light. Given the extreme cloudiness, there was no visible carbonation. A 1 inch fluffy white head lasted for about 5 minutes before shrinking to a thin film and foamy collar which left no spotting or lacing down the glass. Its aroma was primarily lemon citrus with just a touch of banana, but unfortunately these were accompanied by a mildly unpleasant acerbic smell. The taste began with yeast and citrus, followed by a hint of banana, and finished with a sour flavour. A sour/lemon aftertaste didn't linger long enough to be objectionable. Weissbier was light to medium bodied with enough carbonation to make it refreshing. Overall, I'd rate this beer as a decent effort, but the banana aroma and taste are too understated for my liking, and I could do without the acerbic smell all together. It also lacked the clove aroma and taste typical of weissbiers. If I was in the mood for a wheat beer, I'd reach for a Weihenstephaner or Blanche de Chambly instead.
